Multi 23 Small Trimaran Racer (Imported from France)
Mike Leneman (who owns Multi Marine in California) is the U.S. importer/seller of a light, fast and fun racing 23-foot trimaran called Multi 23. This sailboat is a specially designed French model that weighs just 700 pounds.
One of the best French design teams in the world created this racer/daysailer. (It was fashioned after the BMW Oracle 90 trimaran). Its light weight comes from hulls constructed out of high tech vacuum-bagged resin infusion. It also features carbon crossbeams (akas) that demount for trailering.
Multi 23 trimaran isn’t a boat that makes for “easy” trailering because it takes time and effort to get the boat apart and set up again for sailing. But it would make an ideal boat to always keep at the sailing venue you use the most. It comes with everything a new owner needs … all in one package.
According to Mike, it’s one of the easiest small multihulls anyone could ever sail too because of its self-tacking jib. So its ideal for even single-hand sailing. The boat can even carry up to 6 crew members comfortably at one time (if you’re not going to be racing :-)
A blogger called “Trimaran Cool” mentioned Olympic sailor Randy Smythe was sailing Multi 23 at the U.S. Corsair Nationals (at the time of this writing) http://trimarancool.blogspot.com/2009/04/corsair-us-nationals-see-french-design.html. See the full Pensacola News Journal story clip here … http://www.pnj.com/article/20090418/SPORTS/904180339. A final mention of the Pensacola News Journal story can be found here … the key info being the following: “Randy Smyth, sailing his new Multi 23 took overall fleet honors with a low score of 54 points. ‘I’ve sailed lots of trimarans, and wanted to see how this new boat, being the smallest in the fleet, would perform. Rick Zern and I were very pleased with the downwind speed.’ ”
And check out the Multi 23 sailing video clip below …
And here is a Multi 23 being set up to go for a sail (as you can see, it takes 2 people).
