The Europa 20 Beach Trimaran (New Design)
Chris Ostlind sent out word a few days ago that he has just completed plans for a new beach trimaran. He is calling it, “The Europa 20.”
His inspiration for the Europa 20 comes from one of the fastest sailboats in the world — the 105’ French racer named Sodeb’O. As you can see from the pics, the renderings reflect the well-known Sodeb’O red hull color (renderings posted with Chris’ permission).
Among the Europa 20 Beach Trimaran’s proposed features are the following:
* Trailerable
* Demountable amas
* Cored, sandwich laminate
* Glass/epoxy skins
* Center hull daggerboard
* Can use adaptable rigs from 20’ beach cats
Proposed Europa 20 Specifications (taken from Chris’ website)
LOA – 20′
BOA – 15′
Draft – 4-5′ (board down)
Draft – 11′ (board up)
Displacement – 950 lbs. (less engine)
Sail Area – 245-265 sq. ft. upwind
Weight – 500 lbs. approx.
Here is what Chris wrote:
“I’ve just completed the principal design work on a new, demountable beach trimaran with a distinct, performance oriented potential for two-up sailing.
The new boat is called the Europa 20 and it offers a different take on design and functional aesthetics compared to previous small beach tris. I have written an article about the new boat and it is posted on my website.
The boat has been designed to make use of vertical foam stripping with either glass, or carbon laminates set in epoxy. Composite build technique is meant to be either vacuum bagged wet laminate, or closed system infused resin.
With this design, I am looking to explore ideas that I have gathered from half a dozen other high performance trimarans, while massaging the concepts together in a fresh design package at this size. Aesthetically, the boat may not be for everyone.
I make no wild claims as to rocketship-like, eyeball compressing performance. Instead, I am drawing upon many, well-known examples of other multihulls already in the marketplace with similar technical qualities and specifications, to establish a general zone of performance. Suffice to say, in the right hands, the Europa will be quite fast for the market segment it will occupy.
As always, I enjoy hearing your comments — Chris Ostlind, Lunada Design, www.lunadadesign.com“
In his write up about this beach tri Chris mentions a resource for homebuilders (who want to build in cored, sandwich laminate that many readers will find interesting). So be sure to check it out.

Hi , I’ve seen your design of the Europa 20 and I liked alot, I have knowlegde of composites and infusion,matter a fact I work in a high tech shipyard, so I would like to know what are the possibilities to have the plans to build it here in Switzerland, I think it would be fun and practical for the lakes with no need of harbour place, write me back

Hi. I’m interested in getting plans to build the Europa 20. I’m looking for a demountable tri in the 20 foot range with the potential to fly the main hull made to hike out or trapeze. A boat made just to flat out sail with no added frills. I like many of the E 20′s features: the cockpit, the wave piercing bow, the placement of the daggerboard, how the crossbeams attach to the main hull. All the best. Charles
