A Few Fulmar 19 Trimaran Photos

The Fulmar 19 trimaran was a limited production (very limited, in fact) sailboat in Canada. I’ve heard the reason why there weren’t hundreds of these boats built and sold had more to do with business issues rather than the design itself.

That’s not surprising. It was originally designed by John Marples, and intended to be ultra-light, simple to set up and very fast to sail. The production models somehow became a bit heavier and included a feature or two that John didn’t intend to be on the design.

That being said, Fulmar 19 trimaran owner / sailor David S. has thoroughly enjoyed this craft for years. But he is now at a point in life where he is reluctantly giving up the boat to a new owner. So if you’re attracted to the photos that David has supplied (below) then you may contact him at his address in order to see if the boat is still for sale.

Here is what David shared about his Fulmar 19 trimaran …

…………………

This is #14 in a run of approx 20 hulls built by Blackline Marine. I purchased directly from them in 1995, and have sailed it extensively ever since.

It features human powered pedal drive, loose footed unstayed & infinitely reefable Marconi rig. Total weight, unrigged, approx 26o lbs.

Easily taken apart for cartopping but aluminium trailer is way to go!

I tell people that the captain runs out of nerve before the vessel does. Have been out in some pretty fresh conditions, to Block Island and back, in and out of Barnegat Inlet, NJ.

It’s a stellar boat. The rig could be improved but as it is represents ultimate in simplicity…only really suffers beyond a broad reach, before the wind.

A whisker pole is an OK solution but a boom proper, allowing true control over sail shape, is what the doctor is ordering. This boat has been lavished with care and attention.

It’s just time…..

Best,
David

Tried buying one back in the 90′s just after they stopped production. No joy. I agree that this was a great concept. I wonder what it would take to resume production, its a shame this project was stopped before it got started.
