Seaclipper 16 Trimaran Now for Sale

Sailor and self-boatbuilder Bob Trygg notified me last week that he is selling his beautiful (and still practically new) Seaclipper 16 trimaran named TRINKET. He wants to sell this beauty to someone who’ll enjoy her so that he can move on to another boat project.

We first saw Bob’s Seaclipper 16 Trimaran in this post here at smalltrimarans. The official ad for TRINKET is appearing in the classifieds at Duckworks Magazine. Here is how the listing there reads:

16′ SeaClipper Trimaran. John Marples design. Folding Ama’s for easy trailering. Hobie 14 rig with full-battened main and furling jib. Complete with trailer. Sailed at SailOklahoma 2011 with 2 unboard to a GPS speed of 13.9 MPH. $3800.00 Located at Duluth Minnesota.”

Bob also shared the following info and YouTube video with me regarding this particular Seaclipper 16 trimaran…

Joe, last October we had the opportunity to attend the gathering at SailOklahoma on Lake Eufaula with our trimaran “Trinket”. To get there, we had to tow the Tri 1200 miles round trip. In it’s folded configuration it towed very easily with no problems.

We were hoping to have decent winds for some serious speed sailing on a lake that has 660 miles of shoreline. As it turned out we were not disappointed, with winds consistently in the 15 to 25 mph category, sailing was fantastic.

The Hobie 14 rig suits the boat perfectly. With full battened main and furling jib sail handling was very easy. The boat is very stable and comfortable on all points of sail.

The only problem we encountered was the fact that at high speed you can get a little wet from the spray coming from the bows of the boat, as you can see in one of the videos. One sail back to the launch ramp required a sail of about 1.5 miles directly to windward in a narrow channel area, which it did quite easily. For a couple of days we left the boat sitting right on the beach in the sand.

The folding centerboard and rudder allowed us to sail right up to the beach. As far as speeds are concerned, we reached 12 to 13 mph quite consistently with an acceleration that was very exciting. Our true top speed turned out to be 13.9 mph, verified by gps.

All of this sailing was accomplished with 2 adults aboard so I expect that the performance could be slightly better solo. For a 16′ boat I think the performance was fantastic.

Because we are always moving on with other builds we have decided that we will sell TRINKET at this time even though it has given us the fastest sailing we have seen in any of the boats we have built. – Bob
